Samsonville

Aerial view of Olive

Is a hamlet founded in the early 1800’s that is tucked away in the southern part of the Town of Olive. Today Samsonville is largely residential with full and part time residents. People here enjoy the special retreat-like relaxed atmosphere, and strong sense of community. Many of the original buildings in the hamlet still stand today, and include a church, and a number of homes. There was once a tannery here too. The Catskills proved to be an ideal location for the early American leather tanning industry because of the unique forestry of the area (hemlocks), and good access to transportation.
