Like other nearby hamlets in its path Kerhonkson was born when the Delaware and Hudson Canal (D & H Canal) was built in the early 1800’s. The canal became a pre railroad era transportation network that spurred the birth of area industries such as coal, timber, tanneries, and blacksmithing. Along with that also came other business’s such as feed stores, hotels, taverns, dairies and machine shops.
Fast forwarding to today one finds that Kerhonkson is still in the right place at the right time. With its location nestled in the Rondout Valley between the Catskill Mountains and the Shawangunk’s Ridge its considered easy to get to and is close to many of the popular attractions of today. The real estate market here has a wide a variety of homes and price ranges. Farms, land, weekend homes, and family residences are all an important part of the Kerhonkson community.
