Modena first became a settled hamlet in the late 1700’s. It was originally called Clarks Corner. The name was changed to Modena in 1829. Most likely the Hamlet was named for the Italian city of Modena. Modena has always been an influential locality in the area. Here or near here, resided a number families (with last names like: Deyo, Coutant, Terwilliger, Cole and Brodhead) that were involved in the governance of the area, and operated business’s. Today, Modena is considered to be a quiet rural neighborhood. Residents enjoy a short walk to the grocery store, doctor’s office, and other conveniences. The Plattekill library, and a number of restaurants are nearby as well.
