Glasco got its name because there was once a glass company that operated in the area. The area also was home to a number of brick factories. These types of business’s preferred the hamlets location because of its proximity to the Hudson River (for shipping). The hamlet also had a school, churches, and some saloons. Many of the residents of this area (primarily immigrants from Ireland and Italy) worked in these factories. Today the make up of Glasco is residential with some business’s located along Route 9, and the residents are a mix of full and part timers who enjoy its equidistant location, between Kingston and Saugerties.
