This Hamlet started out as a postal village in the vicinity of where three roads intersect – Hoagerburgh Rd., Bruynswick Rd., and Red Mills Rd. Charles Bruyn was the first postmaster. In its early days the Hamlet had a store, blacksmith shop, wagon shop and about a dozen dwellings. Today visitors to the area will find reminders of the Hamlets history through some of its older buildings. An example would be the Bruynswick School No. 8, with its wood framed Greek Revival architecture that was built in 1840.
Other Hamlets within the Town of Shawangunk are: New Hurley, Pine Bush, Walker Valley, Galeville, Dwaarskill, Ulsterville, and New Prospect.
