Description: The Spy House, also known as the DuMond House or the Guard House, was built some time between about 1680 and about 1720. It may be the oldest continuously occupied private residence in New York State. It was built by the DuMond/VanEtten family, and in the 1930s was purchased by the Kent family. It was serving as the local militia company's guardhouse when a British soldier captured as a spy was held here for several days before being hanged from an apple tree across the street. The house has been expanded several times over the centuries, so some of the interior walls were originally exterior ones. Some of the windows and doors are believed to be original. The property is on Town water (from Kent Springs) and has a septic system. Because of its history as the village post office, it also has a few parking spaces.There are very few supporting interior walls, so the space is very flexible. Rooms have been added and reconfigured often over the centuries. People are often surprised at how much larger the house is once inside, compared to how small it appears from the street. The post office addition, 700 square feet on the ground floor with a standup attic, was erected in the early 1950s. It became the village post office in 1953 and served until 1986. Under Hurley's zoning rules governing the historic district, a special use permit could be issued so that this space could be used for professional offices, an artist's studio, or a B&B, but not as a retail shop. The second floor, of about 1, 000 square feet, has been partitioned over the years into several rooms of various sizes: One large master bedroom two small bedrooms with an open space between; a small room that has been used as a nursery and playroom; and a large bathroom, as well as a number of closets and storage areas. The bricks in the chimney were made in nearby Rosendale; there were formerly many brickworks in this region.
